Teenage Pregnancy: a hard lesson to learn
February 27, 2007I was going to the terminal when I saw her. What attracted my attention the most was her apparent resemblance to one of my batch mates. Her hair was longer now and personally I think she looked more mature but there was something in her eyes that told me how hard life must've been these past couple of years. Her eyes looked tired and searching. Nearby a little boy was walking around. She must've been watching that boy. But the most striking thing about her was not her appearance, no, she wore a simple white shirt and jogging pants. It was the her big circle-shaped stomache—she was with child.
She finally noticed that I was staring at her. As she stared back I could tell that she recognized me at least as a student from the school she once attended. I couldn't help but look at her stomache and remember what my mom had said. I didn't stop to greet her, no, we were never close I don't even think that she knew my name. Eventually I passed her without a word. I didn't expect myself looking back after walking a few meters away from her. One… two… looks like her family became bigger. I can't believe it, she made that mistake, again.
She's not my classmate but if she continued her studies and didn't get pregnant that soon she would be in first year college by now. I heard about her situation from my mom, who knew that her sister was my batch mate. My mom told me that she had gone rebel because she had hepa-B and could not take the course that she wanted, nursing. She escaped to her poor boyfriend and eventually got pregnant and bore her child on a day I don't know when. What surprised me now was seeing her pregnant myself. My mom told me that she had already given birth to the first so the child she carries now must be the second one. It was so round that she looked like she carried a ball on her stomache. I think it's a 6 months old fetus.
Her sister is my batch mate and a friend of mine in friendster. We both share a common attitude: we tend to become annoying in our curiosity and inquiries. So far he sister's been faring ok in her academic status though she did do better in elementary compared to high school.
I felt rather bad just passing by her there. I didn't even say hi but then again, why should I? I don't think she even knew me. I still remember her stern attitude as an official in softball before. If my mom hadn't told me, I wouldn't believe that she'd just let her life fall like that. Getting pregnant at that age? To stop going to school? Oh my gosh… I heard that her parents gave up on her. They said that she was spoiled, this separation and time at poverty would do her good. I guess they have a point but I think what they did is harsh. You see, right now, we also have this batch mate who got pregnant, stop going to school, gave birth, then went back to school. She's a graduatee now. Even though she was inactive for one year, at least she could continue with a proper education now with much support from her parents. Her child too is well cared of and had celebrated his/her birthday a few months back.
I wish A.J.'s parents were like that. Then maybe she would've had a better life now. Hay… life, life.. when will you stop giving us trials? I guess… never.
